MasterWish Help
- Creating a MasterWish Account: MasterWish is currently in open beta. While we are still actively developing the site, you are welcome to create an account by going to the account creation screen. You will be prompted for your desired username, your email address, and your password. That's it! - Forgotten your Password: If you have lost your password click here, enter your MasterWish username and e-mail address and click Change Password. A new, randomly generated password will be emailed to your e-mail address. With your new password you can login, and if desired click on Account Info, then Change Password to replace the random password with one of your own. - Adding Items: One of the first things you'll need to do with your new MasterWish account is to start listing the items you would like to receive. There are several ways you can do this, but the easiest method is to go to your Items page with the link in the left menu and simply click the "Add and Item" link. From there, you just need to give your item a name, and a description if you desire. You can also specify price, quantity, and if you would like, a priority level. The other important piece of information you need to provide is a web address where someone might find this item. If you want, you can also provide a link to a picture of an item. Once you have as much or as little information as you want to provide filled in, you simply need to click the "Add Item" button and your new item will be added to your Master List.

You can be as specific as you would like, or provide simply a generic suggestion. The only required piece of information in this form is a name for your item. For example, you may want black socks and have no other limitations set on your item. In that case, you would not need to provide links, you would leave it up to the person purchasing the gift to figure out where to buy your black socks. On the other hand, you may have something very specific you are looking for, including size, color and quantity. In this case, you would want to provide a specific link and perhaps a link to an image for someone who wanted to purchase that item for you. The beauty of MasterWish is that you can provide as much or as little information as you would like. - Organizing your items: Every item you add will always be listed in your Master List. Now you can begin to organize these items into other lists if desired.

To create a new list, click the List link in the left menu, then click Add a List at the top. Fill in a list name, such as books, clothes, aniversary or CDs, and optionally a description, then click the add list button. You can create a list to organize different types of items you want, or to build lists for specific events such as a birthday, aniversary or holiday.

Now that you have a new list you probably want to add some items to it. Select Items from the menu on the left and you will see all the items you have added. Now simply select the more options menu to the right of an item, then select the list you want to add it to from the add to list section. The lists an item belongs to will be listed below the item. To remove an item from a list simply select the list name from the remove from list section of the more options menu.

An individual item can belong to as many lists as you would like, but will always show up in your master list. To view your lists individually select lists from the menu on the left and click on the list name you would like to view. - Finding other people's lists: You can search for other users wish lists through the Find Wishlist box at the top of the page. If you see the Username and Password boxes just click the Search link to show the Find Wishlist box. Search by entering a users MasterWish login, email address, or name and clicking Find Wishlist. A list of all users who match your search will be displayed. Even though you can search by email address and other personal information you cannot view the information unless the user has shared it. - Buying items for others: Once you find the list you are looking for you will see the information the user has provided about the items they want. This may include a description, image, link to another website or other information about the items they want. If you have purchased an item for someone you should mark it as purchased on their list so no one else buys that item for them. Just click on the 'i bought this' link to the right of the item, select the date you intend to give them the item and click 'Purchase'. The lucky recipient will not know you've bought the item until the day after you said you'd give it to them. They will then be notified with a message on MasterWish and given the option to remove the item from their list. - Adding buddies: In order to make it easier for you to keep track of other people on MasterWish, you can identify other users as Buddies. If you click the Buddies link in the left menu, you will be brought to the Buddies page. From there, click the Add Buddy button at the top of the page.

Now simply enter the exact username or email of the person you want to add and click the Add Buddy button. If you entered the username or email address correctly you will now see that buddy in the list. You can add more buddies by clicking the Add a Buddy link again, or you can remove buddies by clicking the remove link to the right of their information.

Another way to add buddies is by using the Find Wishlist search at the top of the page. Here you can enter all, or part of an email address, name, or MasterWish username, then click Find Wishlist. All MasterWish users matching your search will be displayed. To add one (or more) of these people to your buddies, just click the add to buddy list link to the right of their name. If you don't see the add to buddy list link, you just need to log in and search again. - Creating a group of buddies: Groups allow you to categorize your buddies much like lists let you organize your items. By creating groups you can categorize your family members, friends or perhaps co-workers.

To create a group, simply click on Groups in the left menu. You will see an initial group called Anybody which lists all your buddies. To create a new group click the Add a Group link at the top of the page. You must then enter a name for the group in the Group Name field and click Add Group.

Now that you have created your new group, click on Buddies in the left menu to see all your buddies. To add a buddy to a group, click on the More Options menu and select the group you would like to add the buddy to from the Add to group section of the menu. Below each buddy you will see the groups they belong to. Each buddy can belong to more than one list. - Sharing lists with only certain people: MasterWish allows you to specify who can or cannot view any or all of your lists. Creating a buddy list is the first step to managing who gets to see what in your lists. For example, you may not want your friends to see the romantic gift you have listed for your anniversary. Or, you might have specific lists created for individuals.

Once you have your buddies and groups set up (see the Adding Buddies and Creating a group of buddies help topics) select Lists from the menu on the left. Select the More Options menu to the right of the list you want to modify. There you can add or remove groups from that list. If "Anybody" can see that list, then anyone who searches MasterWish can see and potentially purchase these items. If you remove "Anybody" from the list, and add "family", then only those buddies who are included in your family group can see the items in that specific list.

Managing your groups and buddies provides you with absolute control over who can see what in your lists. If your Master List is viewable by Anybody then the whole world can see your items, even if some of your other lists have more specific permissions. Also if you revoke view from all of the groups, then no one will be able to see that particular list. - Import Amazon List: If you have a wish list created at Amazon.com, you can import this list directly into MasterWish without having to add each item individually. To do this, you simply need to click on the "Import Amazon List" link from the top of the items page. From there, you simply need to type in the name of the person whose list you wish to import. You can search by first name, last name or email address. Once you have found the list you wish to import, you can either view the list by clicking on the hyperlinked name, or simply click the "Import" link to add all of those items to your MasterWish list. Once you click the "Import" link, MasterWish will automatically create an "Imported Amazon List" for you. All of the items imported will initially be stored in this list. After the Amazon list is imported, you can move those items to different lists, or leave them in the Imported Amazon List as you chose. You can also rename the "Imported Amazon List" if you would like. If you decide to import a different list, or re-import the same list, then a new Imported Amazon List will be created for you for each import that you complete.
